The Public is Invited to Celebrate the Perseid Meteor Shower with a Free Presentation and Stargazing
The Montreal Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (“RASC”) invites the public to come watch the best annual shooting star show of the year at the Bellevue Observatory at the Morgan Arboretum in Ste.Anne-de-Bellevue, on Monday, August 12, 2013.
The Perseids are considered one of the favourite celestial events of the year regularly producing up to 60 meteors streaking across the late night skies in mid-August. Each year when Earth slams into a cloud of sand-grain sized particles shed by a passing comet, a flurry of shooting stars appears in the skies above as each meteor burns up in the upper atmosphere.
Festivities will kick off at 8 pm with multimedia talk on the Perseids meteor shower by The Night Sky Guy, Andrew Fazekas. Weather permitting the Bellevue Observatory will then open its doors while other telescopes will also be set up around the facility showing spectacular views of planets and stars.
Families are encouraged to come out to the grass field surrounding the dome, bring blankets and lawn chairs and sit back and watch nature’s best fireworks show late into the night.
