It’s that time of year again: starting around February 20th until about March 6, look toward the west during the evening and morning twilight and you may be able to see a faint, roughly triangular, whitish glow stretching up from the horizon. This is the zodiacal light, caused by sunlight scattered by space dust in the zodiacal cloud which lies in the plane of the ecliptic and forms a thick pancake-shaped cloud in the Solar System. You will have to be in a very dark location during a moonless night to be able to spot it, because this light show is extremely faint.
