The Sun has just spewed out two massive solar flares – one medium-sized flare on February 13, and one very strong one on February 15 (this one is the largest we’ve seen in the last four years). If you are lucky enough to have access to a place away from the city lights – and if the sky clears up – you should be able to spot some Northern Lights in the next few days.
To stay up-to-date concerning sky events, you may want to add SpaceWeather.com to your favourites. They also have a fun (but sadly not free) service which will send alerts to your cell phone. Called SpaceWeather Phone, you can receive alerts about solar flares, Space Station fly-bys, meteor showers, and more. The fees are between $4.95 and $6.95 per month, depending on the service.
Fingers crossed for a good light show! If you capture an aurora on video or photo, send it to us and we’ll publish it on our site.
